SHOW RESULTS

RUSSIA – MAY 2007

Never having been to Russia before, having little or no knowledge of the ‘Stafford World’ in Russia, Tony and I set off for Moscow at the end of May, with some trepidation. The moment we stepped out of the arrival gates at the Airport and were greeted by our interpreter: Tat’yana, complete with a welcoming bunch of the sweetest smelling mauve and white lilac, I knew the trip would be fine. We even forgave her for being a breeder of Cocker Spaniels – at least she was a ‘dog’ lady and actually she surprised us with tales of how Cockers ‘work’ in Russia and that some of the English imports from Show stock have turned out to possess amazing, instinctive ability to hunt! The Club members in Moscow had obviously worked very hard to put on this Show – even publishing a book in order to raise funds for the occasion. They put a great deal of thought into organising the show and certainly, from the judge’s point of view, everything was A1 – from the hotel, through the sight seeing tour and even the wonderful food. The weather was beyond their control and it turned out to be the hottest May on record – with temperatures soaring to the mid 30s.

The Show ground was in a heavily wooded park, but unfortunately the ring had little shade, while the audience moved further and further into the tree shade as the day wore on. Only one dog showed signs of distress as far as I could detect – and, no, he was not particularly the short nose sort. In fact I felt that any ‘exciting’ situation no matter what the weather, would cause him problems. His owner was aware of the problem. There was an amazing table of prizes – rosettes, trophies etc and I was given two excellent stewards – one to look after the ring and the other to deal with the paper work – which under the FCI rules makes no mean pile! Taty’ana was the indefatigable translator.

There are several differences between the FCI system and that of the English Kennel Club. The first of these is that there is a Baby Puppy Classes – dog and bitch – for those pups between 3 – 6 months. It is hard judging such classes as puppies develop at different rates – for example, some of these pups had all their teeth others still had, at least, the canines yet to come. As it happens there were a number of really promising puppies on the day, which is hopeful for the future of the Breed in Russia. I found the same in the Puppy Dog & Bitch classes – and my main winners pleased me very much.

I was immediately struck by the expert handling of many of the puppies – and this carried through the other classes. The handlers – and I am not sure if some were not ‘professional’- showed so many animals but with equal expertise. On the other hand some exhibits suffered from lack of ring training – I remember in this respect particularly a young red dog in the puppy class who really was a lovely pup but had no idea how to stand or behave in the ring. It is to be hoped that his owner will put in the effort and give him some ring training, as I feel sure he will re-pay the effort.

My main complaint with handling technique was the handlers tendency to ‘run’ when asked to walk their animals. In too many cases this resulted in the dogs pulling into the collar, putting extra weight onto the front legs and distorting the rear movement. On the move a Stafford should walk upright with drive from his rear quarters, his head held low, but not with his chin scraping the ground! His front legs should move smoothly forward with only a slight lift from the ground.

The majority of animals were black brindle or brindle but the few reds that there were, were notably clear and bright in colour – no black tipped hairs at all. Both dogs and bitches, almost without exception, were in immaculate condition. Only one or two were overweight, the rest were tight in skin, with well defined waists and very good muscular condition, and shiny, short coats. To say that most, as I understand it will be living in apartments, I think their overall condition is a tribute to the attention and hard work of their owners. The overall quality of the animals was very good indeed. Studying the catalogue I noticed that Russian enthusiast had imported some good dogs of British/Continental blood lines. Perhaps more importantly these blood lines have been used sensibly. I could see this most clearly in the progeny classes.

Some problems I noticed were poor ears. As a matter of fact, whenever I have judged abroad, almost without exception ‘ears’ are the most common problem. Usually I see dog after dog with high set, badly folded, untidy ears. But here the main problem was full drop – perhaps both but usually just one un-folded ear. Toenails also need some attention as these should be black and many were not – more ‘tea coloured’ than black. Movement is always a worry with breeds of such a blend as the Stafford. On the whole, apart from those animals poorly handled I found that movement was pretty good with Russian animals. They also excelled – as compared with the U.K. dogs - in having proper, level top-lines which they held on the move. These dogs, as I have said were in very fit condition and had the crest of muscle over the neck etc, but they did not fall away at the croup or in any way roach the spine as we see too often in the British Show ring. The quality of heads is excellent – only a few had weak under jaws for example and most were well proportioned and balanced with the bodies.

My Best Bitch was a top sized red with a very good head, bone and rib and enough balance to make a good picture. My Best of Breed is quite an outstanding dog. I believe I have actually judged him before in Sweden where he did not get Best Dog let alone Best of Breed. The reason then was that he was not moving soundly. On the day in Moscow he moved superbly and so I had no hesitation, in spite of the good competition, to award him Best of Breed. He also won the progeny class, which must be a good thing for the Russian breeders. It does show the importance of judging each and every dog on the day and not on its reputation or how he looked last time you judged him.

Writing individual critiques on each dog I can agree with – even though it is time consuming. Grading, as required under FCI Rules, however, is another story as far as I am concerned. A judge is asked to grade the dog against the Standard. This makes many exhibitors believe that such a grading is a ‘once and for all’ judgement, set in stone. In fact, because e.g. a dog can limp one day and not another; be overweight on one day yet have a beautifully defined body another, the grading is more a ‘grading on the day’. I also feel that such grading puts the emphasis on faults and I am a great believer in judging on virtues.
